Why the Limassol Carnival should be experienced at least once

Limassol is a fabulous place to visit. A vibrant and cosmopolitan city that has so much to offer day or night. If you’re planning a trip to Limassol, then you really should think about coinciding your visit with the Limassol Carnival. This carnival is an amazing spectacle, and many say it’s the best carnival outside of Rio, which is a pretty great accolade! Here are just some of the reasons why the Limassol Carnival should be on your bucket list…

Stinky Thursday

The carnival traditionally signifies the last days before Lent and so it all begins with Stinky Thursday. Now to the uninitiated, this sounds rather unpleasant, but don’t let the name put you off! The ‘stink’ on Stinky Thursday is actually the wonderful aroma of spit roasted lamb and pork that pervades the streets of Limassol on the first day of the carnival. This is the start of a fortnight of the most colourful and fun party of the year.

Music and dancing

During the festival there are concerts held every night and music playing during the day. All the bars and restaurants get involved and there’s a really amazing party atmosphere throughout the streets of the city. It’s a time for locals and tourists alike to let their hair down and get out and dance. It’s a great way to forget your worries and banish stress. It’s hard to feel down when the whole world is partying around you!

Amazing colourful costumes

Dressing up is a big part of the Limassol Carnival and you’ll see some amazingly flamboyant costumes. Of course you’ll have the most fun if you join in and dress up too! If you can’t fit a costume in your luggage when you’re travelling to Limassol, don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of places in the town where you can buy or rent a costume.

Watch the parades

The parades are certainly not to be missed. The Grand Parade lasts for at least seven hours. It’s spectacular! The keen eyed will notice that there’s a strong element of satire that runs through the floats and costumes, a little friendly ribbing of politics and current affairs issues.

Experience true Cypriot generosity

Whenever you visit Limassol, you’ll be taken aback by how friendly and welcoming the local people are. This is very much the case during the Limassol Carnival as everyone gets involved and you’ll find people handing out free samples of tasty local delicacies.
